A personal firewall creates a wall on your Internet connection which monitors your incoming and outgoing internet traffic. Any type of traffic you haven't specifically allowed is automatically blocked. The idea is to seal up any holes in your internet security that would give hackers access to your computer's resources. Ideally, the firewall should also prevent a Trojan horse that has found its way into your machine from phoning home.

Setting up a personal firewall is as simple as installing a piece of software. We use Zone Alarm on all of our personal PCs to protect them.
